Wallingford is an ancient market town and civil parish in the upper Thames Valley. The town was transferred to Oxfordshire for the purposes of administration in 1974. The town’s royal Wallingford Castle held high status in the early medieval period as a regular royal residence. Wallingford is well known to a number of celebrities, including Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker, and mystery writer Agatha Christie, posing as the fictional town of Causton in the television detective drama Midsomer Murders.

Wallingford has a select amount of exceptional schools in the area. They include St John’s primary school, Fir tree junior school and St Nicholas infant school. The secondary school in the area is Wallingford school, formerly Wallingford Grammar School.

Transport

The bus services for the town are operated by Thames Travel, the third largest bus operator in Oxfordshire. They have a fleet of over 50 vehicles, carrying 1.25 million passengers per year.

In Wallingford, there is no consistent railway service. At Wallingford Station, the trains run on weekends and bank holidays between April and September, as well as Christmas. The closest consistent railway station to Wallingford is in Cholsey, which is located about three miles away.
